Exciting News from Sejong Academy!

Sejong Academy's Upper School is proud to be an IB CP Candidate School! The Class of 2027 will be the first class to enter a second IB program to follow the IB MYP and if authorized, they will have the possibility of earning a second diploma from the International Baccalaureate! Our students and parents have expressed interest in health and technology careers so the first two career pathways we are developing are: K-Pop Music Technology and Pre-Medicine Explorations! All students will also be offered DP Math and DP Chemistry - right here on the Sejong Academy campus! We are a small school with mighty programs!

Sejong Academy students travel to South Korea each year, visiting Seoul, Gyeongju, and Busan to experience Korean culture and practice their language skills.

We interviewed students about their expectations before the trip and past participants about their favorite moments.

The full video will be available on Minnesota's Sejong Academy official YouTube channel—stay tuned!

“Creating global citizens aware of diversity in cultures, gaining critical thinking skills, and an elite education through a Korean immersion program is why we chose Sejong Academy for our son. He absolutely loves it!”

Sejong Academy is now an authorized IB World School. Our Middle Years Program for students in Grades 7-10 was authorized on June 24, 2022. IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education -that Sejong Academy believes is important for our students.

2025-2026 Strategic Planning… new Administrative/ Organizational Structure

The board of Sejong Academy had a strategic planning retreat on Saturday, January 25. A consultant from Charter Source helped guide us through the process of answering questions like:

  • Why does Sejong Academy exist? (mission, vision)

  • Where are we now? (we looked at academics, staffing, school climate, etc.)

  • Where do we want to go?

  • How will we get there?

As a result of the above discussion, and the fact that we are no longer pursuing a growth model of 2 sections per grade, the board approved a new organizational structure for the 2025-2026 school year that would be better aligned with our school size and goals. One change was to have a Head of School, as opposed to an Executive Director. We conducted an open search for the Head of School, and at its March 11 special meeting, the Board approved the recommendation of the hiring committee to have Mr. Hoonseok Oh be the new Head of School for the 2025-2026 school year.

Initially, the Board had proposed to hire three full-time deans: Dean of Students, Dean of Lower School Instruction and Dean of IB+. However, believing in a distributive model of leadership, our new Head of School, Mr. Oh, proposed the following positions, which would give more people an opportunity for leadership:

  • Dean of Students

  • Director of Korean Immersion Program (40% of full-time job)

  • Lower School Instructional Coach

  • IB Coordinator (60% of full-time job)

  • Executive and Human Resources Assistant

The Board approved the above structure at its April 24 board meeting. Note: the hiring committee had conducted an internal search for Dean of Students. At its April 24 board meeting, the Board also approved the recommendation of the hiring committee to hire Kate Brogan as Dean of Students for the 2025-2026 school year.

All other positions above will be appointed by the 2025-2026 Head of School, Mr. Hoonseok Oh.

Library Collection Development Policy - feedback

Our Librarian, Danielle Bass, has proposed a new Library Collection Development Policy.

Why do we need the policy?

  1. Policy required by law

  2. For continuity; defined document to guide process of acquiring/decommissioning library materials, etc.

  3. Book challenges/ book bans have been on the rise. Policy will provide procedure/ protocol on how to respond.

Please review the draft policy (link above) and send any feedback to dbass@sejongacademy.org by May 8.

The board will vote on the final version at its May 15 board meeting.
